One of the key objectives of the UK government’s international Research and Innovation (R&I) investment strategy is to strengthen the nation’s global reputation and influence. However, there remains a significant gap in understanding how such international R&I activities contribute to the UK’s reputational standing. This lack of insight poses challenges in capturing and evaluating the reputational benefits derived from these investments.

This report aims to address that gap by reviewing existing literature on the relationship between international R&I activities and the UK’s reputation. Given the limited research in this area, the report offers a conceptual analysis of available studies, laying the foundation for a deeper understanding of the mechanisms through which international R&I investments can enhance national reputation.
