Persistent innovation can confer advantages for firms in terms of cumulative learning and market dominance, maximising the value of fixed R&D assets while minimising technological and commercial risks.
In this review, we summarise the empirical evidence on innovation persistence, providing insights into our current understanding from the academic literature regarding firms’ persistent innovation. The evidence review reveals that innovation persistence is a multifaceted concept with various definitions and measures, highlighting the complexity surrounding the concepts of ‘innovation’ and ‘persistence’.
